Body of Pain

Body of Pain was a dance piece featured in the Contemporary Dance Ensemble's Not What It Seems (2022).

What is left in the midst of pain and loss? Hope and community. Through shifting saturations of amber and red and painterly, hazy worlds of soft-edged light illuminating the movement of this piece, the nuances of grief and togetherness intermingle. This is cut by stark beams illuminating two dancers set apart from the group, ever reaching for their beams as they grasp at life itself.

In effect, though moody and visually striking, glimmers of hope shine through. I adored working with Anandha as our discussions led to striking this delicate balance for such a harrowing and relevant work.

Moving lights, haze, and dynamic cueing through an ETC Ion board were utilized.
