Pippin was my musical design debut! I worked closely with the director, fellow Fresno State alum Summer Session, and my assistant costume designer, Sofia to bring a modern freak-show feel to Pippin, all while paying homage to the original source material.
Each member of the ensemble and all principal cast members matched directly to a different freak show, circus, or carnival trope, from Bertha as a tattooed lady to a human-reptile, made complete with fangs. Using each trope as a basis for each rendering, I then incorporated modern silhouettes and nods to vintage sideshow performance in the dressing and embellishments of garments.
With several on-stage quick changes and reveals, my assistant and I made and rigged several wrap skirts and tops, each prepped for a reveal of the glamour and glitz concealed below.
So the musical began, we had magic to do!
